The English-style of bell ringing (or ‘change ringing’) is a team activity that has developed over several hundred years. Some ringers consider it to be a form of service to the church whilst others consider it to be a secular hobby.
Change ringing’s roots lie in the sixteenth century when bells started to be hung with a full wheel attached. This allowed ringers to swing bells through a 360-degree motion enabling fine control so a set of bells could be rung to a set pattern know to ringers as methods.
